The affordable steel post for wood privacy fences.
The VersaPost costs less than other steel posts. And, it can actually cost less, and be easier to install, than a wood post. For maximum wind resistance it is recommended by most fence professionals that the diameter of the hole be 3 times the diameter of the post itself. This means that a wooden 4 x 4 post requires a 12" diameter hole. The following is from a professional engineering study regarding recommended hole size for a wood 4 x 4 post:"The width of the hole should be as wide as feasibly possible; 12 inches is recommended. A 12-inch diameter posthole filled with concrete will withstand 17 percent more load than a 10-inch diameter hole and 33 percent more load than an 8-inch diameter hole."
The VersaPost needs only a 6" diameter hole. Because of the smaller hole diameter the VersaPost needs less concrete than a 4 x 4 wood post does. Fence post holes also need to extend below the frost-line. The frost-line varies anywhere from 0" to 48" in North America. Less concrete means fewer 80 pound sacks to haul around and mix in a wheelbarrow. In addtition to the concrete, when using wood posts most fence professionals recommend six inches of gravel below the concrete to allow for water drainage. The VersaPost does not require any gravel.
The fence post is the key to how long a wood privacy fence will last. When the price of the post, the concrete and the gravel are added together the VersaPost often costs less than a wood post. Even in those cases where it costs more it is worth the extra money for a post that will last. And, don't forget that digging smaller, and shallower, holes is easier. There is less of a chance of hitting rocks or other obstructions. There is also less dirt to be disposed of when the job is done. Both the material cost, and the labor for installation, may be less for the steel VersaPost than for a wood post that will twist and decay over time.
